So yesterday i was really tired and i was drinking... With me it can go 2 ways, ill either get very quiet or as my fellow guildies noticed yesterday i will talk and even more than i normally do But when i was translating a Dutch saying, people did not believe me. But i can tell you, we have some really odd saying here. So i wanted to tell you guys some. They can bet talk about me than eat from me: they can gossip all they want, as long as i am not paying for their food). Explain that to the cat: Not believing what someone told you Bringing water to the sea: Doing something that is really unnecessary Look a given horse in the mouth (yes really): when you @%# something for free and still complain about it. And i can go oooooooon This is a really fun FB page, those are sentences in Dutch that are litterly translated to English and make my skin crawl www.facebook.com/MakeThatTheCatWise?fref=tsAnd remember, if you ever come across a Dutchie who speaks very odd English they are probably translating there sentences word for word!

In the United States, we have a peculiar breed called rednecks. They also have some interesting phrases. For example:
Slick as a soap maker's ass. Win if you can, lose if you must, always cheat. It's better to be pissed off than pissed on. I'm happier than a tornado in a trailer park. I'm happier than a tick on a fat dog. He's busier than a one legged man in an ass kicking contest. You'd still complain with a candy bar in each hand. You're so dumb, you can throw yourself to the ground and miss. Don't let the door hit you where the good lord split you. When she walks, it looks like two hogs fighting in a burlap sack. You're so full of shit, if you took an enema, you'd fit in a shoe box. She's as mean as a bag of snakes. I'll slap the taste out of your mouth. Her teeth are like stars - they come out at night. He's crazier than a shithouse rat. He's got all the sense God gave a billy goat.

We rednecks also use the term, "quicker than a one armed fiddler".
Also, instead of "look a given horse in the mouth" we say "don't look a gift horse in the mouth".

Not sure if it is a local country boy thing or not, but you will hear "Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6" as often as you see it on a truck window here.

We had a similar phrase back in NC (I grew up deep in the woods, 40 miles north of Raleigh) - "better to have one and not need it than to need one and not have it" (one being a firearm).

Any of the firearm sayings are still very popular down here. I currently live in western NC, but am from and lived most of my life in south GA. I've had a few of those sayings and bumper stickers myself.

We're pretty close to one another Mark. I live in the upstate of SC. I was actually planning to ride my bike to The Black Rose in Hendersonville for some Irish cuisine (bangers and mash) tomorrow but my friend had something pop up last minute.

I have been vacationing in this area for about several years and my wife and I finally made the move early last year. Its a great place to live and the fact that it doesn't get as hot or humid as south GA is a big plus! I haven't been over to Hendersonville, but I think it is a little over an hour to the east of me, I live in Franklin.

I love the naming conventions in NC. I lived in Henderson, not Hendersonville. Henderson is in Vance county, which is right next to Franklin county.
